about

'Wrapped in rapturous discord, Disquiet’s melodies are fit for a sharps container, requiring training for safe handling. The trio improvises with a looseness oozing grease on an Uzi range, raining cartridges in bell house speakeasies. Both grippingly incidental and intimately conversational, who knew that one of the year’s most exciting rock albums would be dappled with murky answering machine babble.'

2017 ~ Top Ten Rock and Post-Rock

'Wow ok. This one blows your head off. Noon are a London-based trio that bring together free jazz, free rock and free everything else. They’ve taken seven years since the release of their debut EP in 2011, but Disquiet was worth the wait. The guitar playing recalls Adrien Belew and St Vincent at their very zaniest as well as packing an additional crunch that pretty much consumes the sound. The drums and bass are at once titanically massive and groovily nimble even when operating at sluggish tempos. It's a bit like Zammuto ... a bit.

'Our Secret Bandcamp release of the week is Disquiet by Noon. Uncompromising.'
- PUBLIC PRESSURE

Trestle Records is pleased to present 'Disquiet', the first full length release from the trio Noon. Following up on the EP released in 2011, this serves as a precursor to a similar vision of live improvised energy, with minimal post editing and a singular 'band' aesthetic that yields a multiplicity of sonic renderings.

'Disquiet' is a distillation of the unabashed vitality of a free-thinking power trio playing live. The band experiments with techniques such as minimalistic displacement of 'beats for rests' and by large, allowing texture and energy to flow and dictate form. Aside the live interaction field recordings and found sounds such as answer machine message's sit alongside bar stool talk of local waterfalls loop in and out of the sum of parts, deployed sparingly.

Parallels can be drawn between Noon drummer Beanie Bhebhe (Rudimental) and Glenn Kotche (Wilco) in so much that an utterly explorative cross platform approach to percussion is allowed to coexist utilising both popular music and more experimental vernaculars. Nick Siddall is at once composing as improviser and as producer, in conjunction with Bhebhe, establishing the building blocks for each piece to be re-traced and delivered into the aforementioned 'texture as form' design. Guitarist, Adam Coney, for the most part is responsible for the jarring combustion of thematic suggestion and melodic scrambling that is at once beatific and dirge.

The references are bountiful. Math rock, free jazz and prog are amongst the multitudinous approaches in Noon’s arsenal. 'Disquiet' is not a deliberately loud, angular, free recording session. In most instances performances took place at conversational levels, and this is perhaps what gives the session its freshness and differentiation. Distortion, restraint and soundstage are all of equal consideration.

'Disquiet' was recorded live at Netil House / Hackney in a single day long session in the Fall of 2015, with 12 microphones and completed with only occasional post production edits.
